Scholarships are universally popular in providing the disadvantaged and the financially handicapped students an opportunity.

The big Corporations have established themselves in providing scholarships for hispanic students, included here are Coors, General Motors, CNN, MasterCard, Lockheed Martin, Sallie Mae, Wachovia, Office Depot and Time Warner.

But questions may arise. Why do these benevolent companies fund hundreds of thousands of dollars to provide Latino Scholarships? What will they get from these Hispanic students?

The answer is not just confided into one, they support the presented programs for Hispanic scholarship founded by the Latino organizations like the National Association of the Hispanic Journalists, Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, and National Hispanic Scholarship, majority of them yield from public relations and the positive society results generated by the programs.

For numerous years, the Latinos as a consumer have become progressively more acculturated into America’s lifestyle mainstream. A few of them have fixed a good place in influencing the public and private sectors, while the others adds to the classy consumers.

Part of the development is rooted from the growing awareness of some Latinos who have been ignored to the point of receiving undeserved treatment from lots of companies. This fact goes though since the Census last 2000 mark them as the clients of their goods and services.

Also, the Hispanic purchasing power is rising, for this reason, the conversationalists and the marketers have started to take advantage of the prospects and escalation of the Hispanic markets.

This is because of the estimate of the Multicultural Economy on year 1900-2009 as reported by the Selig Center for Economic Growth ranges to almost $700 billion annually.

Thus, the thousands of dollars funded for Hispanic scholarship is nothing as compared to the purchasing power of these future consumers. Not just that, the scholarship beneficiaries may also join the labor force in the near future.

According to the critics, there is the rising situation wherein the scholarship provided for the Latinos are too much, as fitted to the number of students in need. However, this is countered by the theory that the Hispanic students who graduate and later joins the labor force of the Americans also produces the same program.

But anyhow, the only thing that matters is that the Hispanic students are given more chances to pursue their college education, through the rise of the benefactors and donors.

Meanwhile, the effects will be the same, the Latinos who graduates gives gratitude to the company who have helped them to finish their higher education.

This article is distributed by Hansel Gunners. Perhaps they got you a little curious, but you are unlikely to spend the money without knowing what you are getting yourself into. I will start this article by what you should get with each component of the program and finish by reviewing the program as a whole.
The program consists of 6 “components.” The first one is a 31 lesson long interactive audio course, these lessons cover common terms to help you roam around using public transport and aids in helping you participate in the community. Though this is standard thing for a language program, most of them do not show transcripts of the terms from the audio course , and these transcripts are in both English and Japanese. This is a good addition as most programs do not bother to teach you to read or write in Japanese, focusing only on the speaking and understanding.

Component 2 comprises grammar and cultural lessons. These lessons will help you to find out when and how to apply certain phrases, including how to act while saying the phrase. This is a one more nice bonus , as it will help to you become part of the culture you are dealing with more easily.

Component 3 is a vocabulary software game. This just an interactive version of flash cards, but the interactivity makes it a lot more fun and helps to adopt the knowledge.

Component 4 is another game, but this time it is an audio game that is designed to make you recognize more than thousand Japanese words. This is pretty nice, as most of ways of learning Japanese don’t help you much to pronounce the words or help you notice when you are mispronouncing them , this is can get only from a full audio program or from a class.

Component 5 teaches writing in Japanese, with another game. This game shows you a character and makes you select the word on the right that corresponds with the character. Again, most programs focus on understanding and speaking Japanese, so this is a great plus.

Component 6 is a learner’s forum where you can ask for help from somebody else studying Japanese or from the Rocket Japanese staff. While nice, but it isn’t really anything phenomenal as there are a great many free forums where you can get the same help .

As see now I really do enjoy the Rocket Japanese program due to the interactive games which help take out some of the monotony of learning another language, and also due to the focus placed on reading and writing in Japanese properly .

Rocket Spanish Rocket Italian Rocket Japanese

Online School Management Software Lets Busy Parents Knowledgeable

Most parents would concur that it is important to keep tabs on their children’s education given the competitive world we live in. Generally parents would have to wait 9 weeks between parent teacher conferences and the occasional report card to understand how their children are doing.
Unfortunately, today’s work environment doesn’t want you to take time spent in evaluating your child’s grades, nor does it give you the space to have a conversation with their teachers and headmasters. More often than not, parents only get to know about behavioral or academic issues once they have blown up to big proportions and then it requires so much more effort to get the child back on track. Handling special cases gets tougher too.

Busy parents need a better way to get in touch with their children’s teachers and keep up with their progress these days. Today’s world has many parents that work a lot of hours and many even travel most of the time.

What’s the solution? The use of technology has brought to you, the parent, an option that has been evolving over the last decade. Using school administration software keeps you up-to-date on your child’s progress and activities during school hours.

Now parents can keep up with their child’s progress on a regular basis without having to put work on hold. In today’s internet-age, this is the best solution to handling their activities, report cards, progress reports, schedules and disciplinary records from one place and with one application.

You can’t beat the value of this product. Early warning signs of a declining academic progress can be seen early on and handled. Further-more, online school management software is so simple to use to keep track of your child’s progress when you’re abroad or away from home for work. More importantly, teachers can always communicate early signs of misbehavior to you.

Software like this is innovative and gives the parents a real understanding when it comes to their child’s school activities. Parents can log in weekly or even daily to find out how their child scored on their term papers and pop quizzes. Some parents are even allowed access to the grade book in the online school management system which will highlight assignment grades and then translate those grades into the cumulative grade point average. A further advantage is in being able to develop the conversation with your child around why the grades are dropping, rather than nagging them to find out what their grades are.

With the availability of this information online, come higher requirements for safety and security. Parents would be given usernames and passwords that are generated by the online school administration software itself. This is to ensure that no one else can gain entry to any personal details about the student or the family.

Fetch practical facts about Historical recession - give a look to quoted publication.

The Reasons Why Graduate Online Degree Highly Recommended?

During this worse worldwide economy crisis, huge numbers of large enterprises that used to be very strong and stable were forced to put down the numbers of their workers. This is done merely due to survival.

A lot of loyal workers who have already been working for years in certain institutions never expected that they would be the victim of this global crisis. Many are thought that it would never happen to them. The crisis is out there and they are on the save area.

What I would like to share here is an option of how to reduce the probability of getting laid off by the corporation where we have been working for decades. Nobody knows how far and how bad the economy crisis would be and what impact that it might bring. Being ready for the worse and prepared for the best, that is what everyone should think about, during this uncertain situation.

One of the best and easiest solutions to increase our bargaining power compared to other fellow colleagues are by getting yourself a higher level of education.

This idea perhaps is not favorable for most people since many of you have to work from morning till dawn, everyday. That means, you don’t have any more time to do something else, and even if you do, mostly you cannot attend the class because you have already felt exhausted after working.

For those who already had their undergraduate degree, and if so far you think that your bachelor degree is suitable to make you work as professional, well… get real. The competition out there is so damn stiff, so that you should equip yourself with higher educational qualifications.

Getting graduate online degree is the best choice. You may get a formal and accredited degree from highly reputable school without even leaving your home. Some of them even take into account your job experience into credits so that you don’t have to study for long time to get your graduate degree.

Most programs are crafted to meet the schedule of busy professionals like you. You don’t have to attend a class, and you may even learn under your own path, independently –whenever and whatever you like. You just need to meet the deadline that is given in a starting of every semester.

In regards to the cost, this online degree programs normally charges smaller tuition fees compared to when you attend an ordinary college. Some good programs from highly credential online school just cost one third of the same programs at ‘normal’ college. This is possible since in online programs, the school does not have to provide things like classroom, pay lecturers to teach, and many other costs related to teaching and learning processes.

Nevertheless, studying independently on online degree program like this needs a very high motivation from the students themselves. They have to be a self-starter person who can diligently manage their own time without messing up with other activities. Self discipline is another important keyword, because without this, you may never complete your online study on time.

Think about this. This option could save you from losing your precious occupation!

Get valuable experiences to Free Traffic System - this is your own knowledge pack.

Special Free Software Program To Teach Speed Reading

Posted on | August 3, 2009 |

Right now, I wanted to write about a very useful ability that I think everybody should learn. Without a doubt, I think most readers here would consider speedreading to be a very worthwhile skill. Having spent the last few days researching, and checking a variety of resources online, now it’s time to share.

By far the most important steps of becoming a speed reader is to understand the techniques of speed reading and how they operate. For some, by learning about just one bad habit you use when reading, you can double your reading speed. Certain people may find, it is just a question of understanding the things they do wrong, and their habits disappear. Other people will find that they need to develop skills through practice and work with specific techniques before it becomes standard practice. No matter which type of people you are in, the answer is clear - it is necessary to using all about the different techniques that intelligent speed readers use to get huge amounts of reading done in a short time.

At the time when I was first learning how to speed read, the trickiest part of learning speed reading was to work on my eye movement speed. This is an important lesson of this skill, because the health of your vision will determine exactly how much of a page your mind can interpret at once. If you can see more in one glance, you will be capable of read each page faster.

There are many ways to improve with speed reading and to improve your eye acuity. Of course, try to focus on the food you eat. Do you remember when your mom used to say to have your vegetables because they help your eyes? Simple fact - good advice - enough beta carotene in your food does have an effect on your eyes. Of course, that only does part of the job. I could eat carrots all day, everyday and I’d still require glasses. Of course, for a small difference, increasing the amount of beta carotene in your intake could make your vision a small bit better.

Your genes can sometimes have an impact. Too bad, there’s nothing much to be done about this.

One thing you can do to develop acuity is to pick up a fresh piece of free free software for speed reading. I found this program a few days ago, and let’s just say, it’s darn good. School begins once again for millions of kids across the country. Getting your child prepared, regardless of whether they are in Kindergarten or a senior in high school, is a must. Here are some tips to make the transition from several weeks of summer fun to school days and homework easier.

Children in Kindergarten – 5th grade

1. About a week before school starts, have your children go to bed at the time they will when school begins. Set their alarm or wake them up early. It’s difficult for some kids to adjust to going to bed and getting up earlier after having an entire summer of sleeping in or staying up late. Many young children need to be on a schedule and preparing a week or so earlier will pay off, especially if you have a night owl or late sleeper.

2. If you have a school supply list (many school districts post them on their website or hand them out the last day of school), buy the supplies early. For the child who is not organized, this is a good way to begin the school year off on the right foot. Label everything and get the backpacks ready the night before school starts. Buy some extra supplies to keep at home if your child is one to lose or forget their pencils or markers at school. They will probably need some basic supplies for homework time. Nothing is more frustrating than sitting down to do homework and discovering the basics are missing.

3. If you have a Kindergartener, walk to school two or three days before school begins (or drive if they take a bus or you will be driving them). This helps acquaint them with what they will actually be doing that first day and can work wonders for alleviating the first-day jitters. If your child is especially anxious, ask if you can let them visit their new classroom for five or ten minutes the day before school starts. Many principals will let the Kindergarteners come to the campus prior to school starting.

Middle School

1. Many sixth graders will be attending a new school for their middle school years. Oftentimes, the campus is much bigger and can be intimidating. Of course pre-teens may not admit they are nervous, but most parents are. Suggest a bike ride over to the school sometime during August just to look around. Many middle schools conduct orientation anyway a couple of days before school actually begins, but an extra trip without all of their peers might be worthwhile.

2. Just as in elementary school, it is important, if not more so in middle school, to have all the school supplies ready, especially an organizer. Some schools make it mandatory for the students to purchase an organizer directly from the school. Get in the habit from day one of checking it and being sure homework assignments are recorded. Visit the school website and see if homework and grades will be posted on the site. This is an excellent way to stay involved with your child’s progress throughout the year.

3. If your student struggles with the basics; math or language arts, consider hiring a tutor for some review sessions before and during the first semester. Also, it is quite common in middle school for students who are excelling to be moved to Honors classes sometime during the year. Being in an accelerated class is a good way to prepare a student for Advanced Placement (AP) classes in high school, which count as college credit.

HIGH SCHOOL

1. Find out when the PSAT and SAT exams will take place. If your student is not a good test taker, consider enrolling them in a test prep class. As colleges become more and more competitive, test scores make a difference. One can take the exam more than once if they are not happy with the score, so plan ahead and register early.

2. Stay tuned in to your student’s school and social schedule. There is a tremendous amount of freedom in high school and even the most academically gifted students can be distracted by all of the things that are associated with the teenage years. Establish a curfew for school nights and limit the amount of time that is spent at a part-time job or involved in sports, especially if time management and study skills are not your child’s forte.

3. If your son or daughter is college-bound, start doing your research and be sure to attend the college nights that many high schools sponsor. Know what is expected on college applications. It is no longer a simple process like it was for the baby boomer generation. Test scores, a formal essay, volunteer hours, and class selection in high school are all important factors in getting into college. Take advantage of the many companies that exist today solely for the purpose of assisting you and your student select the right college for them.

Regardless of the age and grade of your children, stay involved. Volunteering on any level, whether it be reading stories to your elementary aged child’s second grade class, helping in the computer lab in middle school, or being on a committee for peer counseling in high school, it is important to know what is happening at the place your children spend a large part of their week. With so many parents working, many Parent Teacher Associations have their meetings in the evening, so more parents can attend. There are activities that need volunteers that do not involve daytime hours such as calling parents in the evening for a fundraiser or helping with a weekend car wash at high school.

These tips can help your children get back to school the right way and prepare them for a year of learning and fun - “Education System“.

Find practical information in the topic of forex trading online - welcome to your own knowledge pack.

Learn Your Learning Style

Posted on | June 19, 2009 |

The ability of people to understand and absorb lessons is certainly different to another. Some are fast learners and some are very slow. Therefore, they often have to tread a different way to understand the same information or subjects.

Some students prefer a teacher to teach them how to write everything on the blackboard. That way they can read and try to understand it. Nevertheless, some other students prefer a teacher to teach them how to disclose orally and they can listen to understand. Meanwhile, there are students who prefer to form small groups to discuss questions concerning these subjects.

Another way that is also often preferred model is a lot of students prefer to learn as if the teachers are lectors. Teachers are expected to tell long-winded theory about the myriad of illustrations, while the students listen to a lecture that describes the content of the form in which only they understand themselves.

In any way you choose, style differences of learning shows the fastest way and best for each individual to absorb information from outside. Therefore, if we can understand the differences in learning style of each person, it might be easier for us to guide someone to get the appropriate learning style and provide maximum results for himself.

Of course, before we can begin to teach people about their learning style, it is better to recognize our own learning style first. This consideration is because we often forget. In other words, we must feel the experience of getting the right learning style for ourselves, before spreading it to others. There are many reasons and benefits that we can get when we are able to understand the variable style of learning, including our own style.

Senior people usually absorb a lot of knowledge about learning style, based on their life experiences. For example, they had to work, undergo military training, educating and guiding children, and so forth. This series of experiences that they’ve been through, indeed, is part of the way they get the lessons. From that point, we can spare to see what actually learning style that is right for us. Whatever style you choose to follow, the most important thing that should not be overlooked is to do what it will be useful for you!

There are several types of learning styles that we can analyze and we may follow if we feel that matches the style. First, the Visual Learning Style (Visual Learners). Learning style as it explains that we must view the evidence first and then be able to believe/understand it.

There are some unique characteristics like the people who like this visual style of learning.
1. The need to see something (information/lessons) to visually understand or know about it.
2. They have a strong sensitivity to colors.
3. They have adequate understanding of artistic problems.
4. Having difficulties in direct dialogue.
5. Reactive against sounds.
6. Having difficulties in following verbal instructions.
7. Often false in interpreting words or speech.

To overcome the above problems, there are several approaches that could be used, so that learning can still be done with a fantastic result. The first is to use various forms of graphics to convey information or material subject. The graphical tools can be films, slides, pictures, illustrations, graffiti, image cards, and note cards. Those tools can be used to describe the information sequentially.

Auditory Learners – It is the learning style that relies on hearing to be able to understand and remember. Characteristics of study such as this model really put the hearing as a primary tool to absorb the information or knowledge. This means we must listen, and then we can remember and understand the information. These characteristics are:
1. Information can only be absorbed effectively through hearing.
2. Having difficulties in absorbing information through direct writing.
3. Having difficulties in writing and reading.

There are several approaches that can be done to get the maximum results. The first is to use a tape recorder as a helping tool. This tool is used for recording the lecture during classes and later on you’ll be able to play it back. Second approach that can be done is to interview or engage in group discussions. Third approach is to try to read the information, and then summarized in the form of oral and recorded for later heard and understood. The last step is to conduct a verbal review with a friend or teacher.

Learning style that is unique also called Tactual Learners or in other words, we have to touch something that gives certain information so that we can remember. These characteristics are:
1. Placing a hand as the main recipient of information to remember it.
2. Absorb information by holding without having to read the explanation.
3. Can’t remain seated for too long while listening to the lessons
4. Learn better when followed by physical activity.
5. Having the ability to coordinate a team and the ability to control body movement (athletic ability).

For those who have the characteristics as mentioned above, the approach is based on learning through experience or by using different models or equipment, or working in the laboratory, or to play while learning. Another way that can also be used regularly is to create a pause in the middle of the study. Therefore, this is a brief guide on how to write research paper parts, in what order to do them, and, in some instances, why.

HOW to WRITE RESEARCH PAPER BIBLIOGRAPHIES

You notice which this task is first, here. For high-quality reason. You collect the books, publications, and articles (online and offline at your local or school library). For instance, if your paper is in connection with personal trainer certification, you could consult fitness journals. You discover tons of pages of material that you put into notes then draft into your paper. Probably you return the library books. Or chances are good a website database of articles goes down. You can’t of course, remember all of the page numbers or other bibliographical knowledge to cite properly…. So…the thing to do is find the great resources, and without delay do the bibliography. Some human beings however use the old-fashioned way, putting each source on a separate index card. Some sort right now onto their computer. But doesn’t matter what method you prefer, be sure to receive the bibliographical info (author(s); title(s); place and date of publication) and, if you can, jot down page numbers.

HOW to WRITE RESEARCH PAPER OUTLINES

Granted, instructors might ask for an outline early on, before you have your subject matter narrowed or your resources gathered. But ponder this a freeing exercise: you have a society of choices to touch, turn, inspect, re-examine, and project on. You can even Google it, like you might wholesale wedding favors.Think of a concept or event or person, and think of all the probable categories you would include. You can go by time, and do a historical survey; you can ponder cause and effect or problem and explanation; you can set up an argument and come up with reasons and reasoning. Block off every part with headers and subheaders…. (Look at a site map for a larger site if you don’t require to employ the old Roman numeral system.) Think in terms of general to specific or largest to smallest (the littler fitting inside the larger).

CONSULT EDUCATIONAL Sites on the internet for HOW to WRITE RESEARCH PAPER CITATIONS, ETC.

Be sure to cite—give credit to—everything you make use of right now from the text. It is okay to lift the choicest quotes; just be certain to put “ ” around anybody else’s words. Even if you paraphrase, you should employ the parenthetical citation method (which is used in MLA, APA, and other documentation styles, anyway. Check Purdue University’s OWL (Online Writing Lab), Dartmouth’s Writing Center, or another sound source for your source-citing, outlining, writing and other how-to-write-research-paper advice…cause I am running out of time. According to the University and Colleges Admissions Service
(UCAS), an extra 57,000 students have applied for degree courses compared to the same time last year, leading to speculation from many corners of
the media that around 50,000 people will be denied a place. Yet, as higher education funding is cut, and university places become more in demand - it
may surprise some that university has never really been anymore accessible.
A good example of this increased accessibility could be the Children's University. What started as a Saturday school in Birmingham in the 1990s, has
now become a national organisation that gives children aged between 7 and 14 the opportunity to learn outside of school, whilst promoting the
importance of further education when school is over.
The latest Children's University scheme is taking place in Stoke-on-Trent in association with Staffordshire University and Wedgewood Museum in
Barleston. According to thisisstaffordshire.co.uk, students partake in 30 hours of accredited activities and are rewarded with a fully fledged graduation
ceremony which even includes mortar board and gown. Not only is the introduction of the concept of university seen as a very positive thing, but
children are also stimulated to be more active within their community - and becoming more familiar with the notion that learning doesn't have to be
restricted to what they see on their curriculum.
At the other end of the scale, a 55 year old man from the isolated town of Sandsound in the Shetland Islands is proving that time really is no object
when it comes to further education. According to The Shetland Times, James Smith has been named as one of the longest serving devotees of
distance learning by studying one course or another for nearly 30 years.
The electronic engineer for Bolts Shetland Ltd. car hire company is also a retained fire-fighter, yet despite his already busy schedule he has always
been eager to keep up to date with changes in radio, television and computers. Not only do distance learning courses allow him to keep abreast with
developing technologies in his own time, and in an area of the country that has traditionally been perceived as ‘cut-off' from the accessibility of
education we are familiar with on the mainland - but the price of each course has been affordable and worthwhile enough for Smith to continue long
into adulthood.
About the Author
Sarah Maple is writing for Kaplan UK about degree courses.
Source: http://www.edarticle.com

Facing Your Fears as an Adult Returning to School

by Matt McAllister In case you hadn't noticed, career colleges aren't just for learning a vocational trade anymore. Nowadays, career colleges can help
you obtain a Bachelor's, Master's, or even Doctorate Degree in just about any field of study, or they can even help you simply brush up on skills you might
already have on your way to earning a certification or Associate's Degree. So while some career schools might still specialize in vocational trades like auto
body repair, masonry or hair styling, the majority of today's career colleges are designed to help working professionals meet their career objectives.
Prompted by an inviting and growing selection of career and online colleges, more adults are returning to school than ever before. Whether you're seeking
to advance your current career and education, break into a whole new field, or just enjoy studying something you've always wanted to, going back to school
can be enjoyable and rewarding. And yet, many potential students who could clearly benefit from enrollment at a career college are hesitant to do so. The
reason? In too many cases, they are being held back by nothing other than their own fear. The First Step is Admitting It Let's begin by getting everything
out on the table. Some reservations commonly heard from working adults who are considering a return to college include the concerns that: They won't fit
in It's too expensive There isn't enough time in the day It will take forever to complete a degree Employers won't view the degree (or certification) as
credible The coursework won't be valuable or useful In reality, just about any student who has attended a career college--whether online or
on-campus--will tell you that there really isn't anything to fear in a return to school. While they may have once had the same fears as you do now, they
learned very quickly that those fears were actually unwarranted. By taking each fear one by one, we can begin to understand what these current students
now know and how glad they are that they didn't let their fears hold them back. I'm Afraid I Won't Fit In It is common for a person in their thirties or forties
to worry that they'll stick out like a sore thumb in a classroom filled with "kids" from the ages of 18 to 25. However, recent information from the
Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Education states that adult students are the fastest growing educational demographic, revealing that 40% of
college students are now 25 or older. Further information from the National Center for Education Statistics points out that students age 35 and older rose
from 823,00 in 1970 to nearly 3 million by 2001. If you're still worried about fitting in to the classroom as an adult, a few facts that might help allay your
concerns include: With online learning, you'll be working on a more individual basis and won't have to worry about 'standing out' in a physical classroom;
Many colleges, traditional or otherwise, have seen a spike in their 'older' students, and it's likely you won't be the tiny minority that you expect; and Many
older adults actually find it rejuvenating and refreshing to be in a classroom environment with a younger group that is eager to learn. I'm Afraid It Will Be
Too Expensive Tuition?books?it all adds up. And many potential students get scared off by the investment it requires to earn their degree. But the key to
overcoming this fear is to consider it as just that: an investment in your future. Think long term instead of short term. In almost every case, the career
advancement you will get after earning your degree will easily make up for the upfront costs of attending school. Besides, many career colleges--especially
those online--may be more affordable than you realize. Do your homework and weigh the long-term benefits before deciding not to enroll in a school for this
reason. I'm Afraid It Will Take Up Too Much Time For the busy working adult, the notion of taking on any additional endeavors can be downright stifling.
It's not always easy balancing work with personal life, and adding school on top of all your other responsibilities might seem virtually impossible. And yet,
it's not. You'd be amazed at how much extra time you can squeeze into a day. Sure, there will be some sacrifices you'll have to make, but if you just try
watching a little less television, say, or letting your friends know that you won't be able to make that barbecue next weekend, you'll be amazed at how much
time you can free up. Just remember to keep your eye on the prize, and your sacrifices will all seem worthwhile. One good option for students who might
have a hard time committing to a schedule is to enroll in online courses that are "asynchronous." The asynchronous learning model works a bit
like email in that you can access the coursework, instructor's lessons and classmates comments at your convenience, then respond whenever you are
able. There are no set classes for you to attend, no specific schedules that might conflict with the rest of your day, and, because you'll be taking classes
online, no commute time for you to worry about. I'm Afraid It Will Take Forever To Complete My Degree Traditionally, a Bachelor's Degree takes up to
four years to complete, a Master's Degree requires at least two years, and a Doctorate Degree can take up to eight years or more. That's all fine and good
for someone who can dedicate themselves to being a full time student, but for those who can only commit to part-time status, those timelines might appear
too far off the horizon. But the facts of the matter are that most degree programs at today's career colleges are based on accelerated learning, meaning
that most degrees take less time to complete than traditional learning environments. Coursework is based on shorter semesters--typically five weeks--and
delivering a quality education as rapidly as possible without sacrificing the student's ability to learn and absorb the material. In some cases you can even
earn your degree is less than a year! I'm Afraid That Employers Won't Take My Degree Seriously Because their degree won't be coming from some
top-name university like Harvard or Yale, some would-be students decide that it's not worth getting a degree from a school that employer's won't view as
credible. In reality, however, most employers today do view degrees from career colleges as not only credible, but oftentimes on par with their more
traditional counterparts. It wasn't that long ago that many HR professional may have viewed career colleges--particularly online career colleges--as carrying
less weight than traditional colleges, but as the online education space evolves and faculty members and curriculums at online schools catches up with
those at traditional schools, more and more HR executives are realizing the validity of degrees earned online or through career colleges. In fact, to some,
an online degree represents a certain career ambition, technological prowess and commitment to seeing something through to the end on behalf of the
applicant. I'm Afraid I Won't Learn Anything New Or Valuable Many potential students are fearful of the fact that their trouble to go out and earn their
degree might be all for naught--that the classes won't teach them anything they hadn't learned already in their professional experiences. As anyone who

Financial Aid Options For Adults Who Want To Continue Their Education

By Gary Stuart Approximately 90 million adults in the United States are now enrolled in some kind of training or educational program. Four out of every
ten college students are over twenty-five years of age. Another 800,000 take the General Educational Development (GED) test every year to earn high
school diplomas. Adult education and re-training is a big trend! Some of the pressure to get more education is coming from a job market that demands
up-to-date skills, especially in technology. The workers with the best and most current skills are in the most demand and earn higher salaries. A college
degree often opens the door for a better job or promotion. The United States Bureau of Census estimates that a college degree is worth about $1.2 million
over the course of a person's career. Colleges have adapted to the growing market of returning adult students by changing the way they offer their
courses. Many big-name universities now offer their most popular degree programs, such as the Masters of Business Administration, in classes that meet
evenings and weekends. Others are providing a combination of weekend, evening and online courses to accommodate the schedules of busy
professionals. One of the biggest trends of all is the emergence of the online university. Tens of thousands of adults are now earning "online"
college degrees. They can log into a chat room and discuss assignments with other students and their professionals. They can study online whenever it's
convenient. Many of these online schools do not follow formal semester schedules and thus can allow students to take classes whenever they want to start.
Adult students, sometimes called "re-entry students," can qualify for traditional government financial aid if they are enrolled at least half-time.
This usually means that they must be taking two full-credit courses at once. Their schools must have the proper accreditations to participate in Title IV
programs in order for them to be eligible for aid. If a re-entry student is taking enough credits to qualify at a Title IV school, he or she then goes through
the traditional financial aid process. The first step is to fill out a FAFSA, an abbreviation that means Free Application for Federal Student Aid. You can
download a FAFSA and instructions at http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/ english/fafsa.jsp. Students need to fill this out to qualify for
programs. If a student demonstrates financial need, he or she may qualify for government grants, which do not have to be paid back. The Perkins Loan
program, also for low-income students, provides loans at very low interest rates that are paid back over a period of ten years beginning nine months after
graduation. College students who are enrolled at least half-time and who can maintain a C average may apply for government loans, also at low interest
rates and long payback periods. Sometimes you will owe the money directly to the government. In other cases, a student will have a loan from a private
lender who acts as a middleman. Re-entry students should always contact their financial aid officer at the college of their choice. Their counselor can help
them with their FAFAs and other forms, as well as find them a bank to loan them money through a government program. A good knowledgeable financial
aid officer will help students find private scholarship money, too. Although the majority of scholarships are for undergraduates in traditional campus
programs, there are over 1800 for re-entry students over twenty-five years of age. While there are private scholarship search companies, most students
should be able to do this task themselves for free on the Internet or through their financial aid office. If you are now serving or have served in the military,
you should ask your college financial aid officer about military benefits for continuing education. Sometimes employers will pay for continuing adult
education. Many employers just want an employee to pick up a certain course to enhance job performance in one area. Other employers will pay for the
completion of college degrees and even advanced degrees. Some universities try to pressure students into enrolling before the students know how much
financial aid they will receive per semester. To avoid this problem, you can go online and plug in your FAFSA numbers to get a rough estimate of your
financial aid package. Your financial aid officer can help you get this estimate before you sign up for tuition payments. It is also important to understand
your school's refund policy. Some students enroll and find out that they cannot carry a half-load of college work plus their professional and family
responsibilities. Then they find out their schools will not refund their tuition money either in whole or in part, and that they will have a problem getting out of
their federal loans. Arnold Getting an online education is both a very thrilling proposition and a challenging one as well. It is quite exciting to learn through a
very new and non-traditional form of education and it offers a set of new challenges that would compel individuals to really immerse themselves in what
they are doing. Unfortunately, even with an educational format as new as online education, the same old problems that plague students would usually
crop up. The most common difficulty a student encounters is losing the motivation to continue studying. This feeling is further exacerbated by the unique
environment that a student must contend with in an online education course. Being alone with no real classmates to act as real-time sounding boards and
given the free rein to handle your time it becomes a challenge to really get into the groove of studying. Since online education classes are a new education
format, it also does not possess many of the known support systems that we can find inside a traditional school structure. These support systems are what
helps keep students motivated. The lack of social interaction can also be a significant contributing factor for online education students easily losing the
motivation to study. Losing motivation is quite difficult because it could become difficult to stay focused on what needs to be done. Losing the impetus to
study will make it very difficult to prepare for exams or tests, complete assignments and finish projects. Motivation is what drives a person to study through
the boredom, the tedium and the difficulties. Without motivation, the whole purpose of taking online education classes loses meaning. It would be just so
easy to quit and stop taking the classes at the risk of losing the tuition paid for the online classes. For those who may be worried that they may lose their
motivation, the good news is that it can be restored or reinforced. Below are some tips given by many education experts as a way of keeping motivated. *
One way to stay motivated is to identify a goal and work towards its attainment. Try to focus on small goals that can be easily fulfilled. You can mark off a
calendar with daily and weekly goals that you are required to accomplish. As you fulfill each goal cross it out with a pen. This process helps you build up
your pride in your accomplishments. * Try to talk to other people about what you are learning in your online classes. This process is usually done with
your classmates in a traditional school system but because of the nature of online education, you really do not have classmates in the traditional sense.
What you can do is talk to family members and friends about what you have learned in your online classes. One other thing you can do is to try to arrange
a chat with your instructor so that you can have some time to discuss the subjects and/or curriculum with him. * Try to be active in forums related to your
course or classes. Even though there are no real physical ways of meeting fellow students in an online course most educational institutions that offer online
education provide chatrooms or forums where you can chat with other people taking the same courses. These chatrooms or forums provide ample
opportunity for different kinds of interactions with fellow students. You can use it to get to know other students personally and if you find one that lives near
you, then you can probably arrange to meet with them regularly to discuss your subjects. You can set up online study groups that other students who taking
the same course can use.
About the Author
Timothy D. Whether it’s for professional, social or personal reasons, learning at least one foreign language
is a must for anyone that wants to keep his or her head up high in today’s society. Let’s take a focused look on 5 of the main reasons that should turn you
towards learning a foreign language.
1. Professional Requirement
This is probably the main reason for which one would learn a foreign language. Many professions require the knowledge of at least one or two foreign
languages, depending on the field of the job. Most jobs may ask that you know an international language such as English, French, Spanish or German or a
business-specific language such as Chinese, Japanese, Russian and so forth. If you’re a native English speaker you may have it a bit easier, since English
is the main international language (and one that is present the most often in job descriptions) but knowing a secondary might also prove vital.
2. Social Bonus
Yes, knowing a foreign language (or more) is definitely a social bonus. There’s definitely a steep hill to climb between being presented as someone that
doesn’t know any foreign language whatsoever against being presented as a polyglot. Another case when knowing a foreign language can be literally a
social blessing is when meeting a foreigner whose language you can speak. They’ll be extremely impressed by your ability to talk with them through their
own native tongue, although you’re on home grounds and this fact can single handedly create a great impression around you. If the foreigner happens to
be part of a business meeting, this impression can turn to a successful business partnership, bringing you both professional and social satisfactions.
3. Family Communication
It’s often the case where a couple formed out of persons of diverse nationalities understand each other through a commonly known international language
such as English. However, they’ll soon want to start learning the other person’s mother tongue, not only for a better communication, but also out of respect
for them.
4. Personal Satisfaction
Learning a foreign language is one of the highest intellectual goals that one could have, on a personal scale. Think about a difficult puzzle, or math problem
that takes months if not years of constant studying in order to be solved. The process of solving it may be a hard, arduous one but the yell of joy at the end
is well worth it. It’s the same case with learning a foreign language: the learning process is not easy and you’ll have many small issues and problems to
tackle along the way. You’ll have to focus on various aspects of the problem, such as spelling, grammar, reading, pronunciation and so forth. If you keep
the problem in sight however and if you don’t lose interest in it, the chances of solving it are extremely high and the intellectual fulfillment that you get at the
end is incomparable to anything else.
5. Keeping Your Mind Healthy
It’s been scientifically proven that by learning a new language, the process stimulates your brain in such a way that it will make you more keen on
understanding and learning other subjects, including “real” disciplines such as math, physics, chemistry and so forth. Learning a new language requires the
memorizing and understanding of several thousand new words and concepts, which offers your brain a good training for future occasions where
memorizing is a must. After studying a foreign language you’ll have better results with studying for exams, with information assimilation and generally, with
keeping your mind healthy and “active” even at older ages.
About the Author
Misha Gavryuchkov is a life-time language learner and a web programmer too. Technology
has altered the very nature of business and this had greatly influenced the employment market. Jobs requiring expertise and technical skills are growing in
nearly every sector of the economy. The continuous change in what employees need to know and be able to handle suggests that learning, training and
education will occur over the length of a career and, in fact, a lifetime. In light of this, adults have had to become life-long learners by consistently
challenging themselves to pursue learning opportunities. Thus, a large and growing segment of the education industry more so for the post graduate
courses are made of "non-traditional" students. These are working adults who are interested in enhancing their job skills, retooling for new
positions and careers, and pursuing other customized learning experiences. With the changing trend in the employment market, higher learning institutions
are experiencing increased demand for a larger variety of rapid paced educational resource options for the adult learning community. However, one of the
greatest challenges faced by higher learning institutions is identifying instructional or delivery methods that enhance adult learning process. Thus the
objective of any higher learning institutions should be to provide and establish learning objectives which are attainable by students and to use the
appropriate instructional method in order that these objectives be met. This paper will explore the opportunities available for working adults to further their
studies and also identify the instructional methods in delivering lessons. Education helps in the development of the human mind, and it increases the
powers of observations, analysis, integration, understanding, decision making, and adjustment to new situations. In other words, education is concerned
with increasing one's knowledge and understanding the total environment. Among the major research areas of learning are the self-directed learning,
critical reflection, experiential learning and learning to learn. The first, self-directed learning is one that uses past experience as a resource base for
learning, fitting new knowledge into current work and personal life situations. This brings with it real-life problem- solving and time-management advantages
for the time-conscious student. The second, known as critical reflection, Brookfield observes it as the psychological development of an adult. This would
relate to a host of constructs such as embedded logic, dialectical thinking, working intelligence, reflective judgment, post-formal reasoning and epistemic
cognition which explain how adults come to think contextually and critically. As for experiential learning introduced by Liademan, the emphasis is on the
experience of the working adult. Adult education is therefore a continuing process of evaluating experience, which is central to the concept of andragogy
that has evolved to describe adult education. The fourth; learning to learn, is about the ability of adults seen in a range of different situations and through a
range of different styles. Both the concepts of epistemic cognition and reflective judgment were introduced in this process of learning to learn. The
pedagogical model of instruction is the foremost instructional method used in delivering lessons. This mode of teaching is also known as the traditional or
teacher-directed approach. Knowles, mentions that pedagogy is derived from the Greek word "paid" meaning child plus "agogos",
meaning leading. Thus, pedagogy has been defined as the art and science of teaching children. The traditional teaching in this context is teacher centered
instruction in which teachers do most of the talking and instructing while students do a lot of passive listening and memorizing. This type of teaching is best
characterized by the phrase; the teacher is the sage on the stage. Teachers define terms, give directions, explain problems, answer questions, and
otherwise present information to students. In contrast, non-traditional teaching is student centered instruction in which teachers have a very different role,
one best characterized by the phrase; the teacher is the guide on the side. Knowles, carried out extensive research into adult education and highlighted the
problems of inappropriate learning for mature age students. He revived the use of the term "andragogy" and defined it as the "art and
science of helping adult learn". The emphasis in andragogy is that the teacher takes the role of facilitator rather than teacher, and allows student to
realize his or her own potential. In such an environment, students do lots of investigating, exploring, solving, discussing and explaining to their peers and
teacher. As a result of researches by Brookfield and Knowles, adult learning is now strongly identified with personal growth and social change. This point is
particularly relevant for adult students who return to tertiary education at postgraduate level to prepare themselves for senior positions within their
professional communities. However the andragogy model asserts that five issues be considered and addressed in formal learning. They include: (1) letting
learners know why something is important to learn, (2) showing learners how to direct themselves through information, and (3) relating the topic to the
learners' experiences. In addition, (4) people will not learn until they are ready and motivated to learn. Often this (5) requires helping them overcome
inhibitions, behaviors, and beliefs about learning. Adult Learning Pursuits The traditional educational model was well suited to the industrial age society
where individuals had rigidly defined roles in which carrying out certain actions under certain circumstances would generally yield the desired results.
However, the information age has replaced the relative predictability of the industrial age with an increase of uncertainty that will require greater levels of
flexibility and adaptability in order to survive and thrive. Education would need to change from being a process of conditioning to one of empowerment.
Learning would need to change from being a homogenous commodity to a customized experience tailored to the needs and characteristics of the
individual. In this aspect, the executive MBA (EMBA) which is also known as the non-traditional MBA would appeal to the working adults who wish to
continue their studies. The EMBA programs are delivered via the non-traditional educational model, which is related to the andragogy learning concepts.
These programs are also designed specifically for the middle or upper level managers with some working experience. However, this perception no longer
holds true as more working adults from different executive levels are enrolling for these MBA programs. The wide acceptance for this is because of its
customer-suited packaged which offers greater flexibility to better serve the needs of students, particularly the working adults. Non-traditional Format
Prospects The education industry has been profoundly affected by the emergence of communication and information technologies which provide

It Is Never To Late To Learn

It Is Never To Late To Learn

by Rose Mary There are people who do not pursue college education during their early days. For those who do, some of them do not continue with

graduate education immediately after completing their first degree. These people have several reasons for not pursuing their studies at that time. Firstly,
they may lack the financial support for their study. Secondly, they may not be able to meet the entrance criteria set by the college. Thirdly, they may lack
the interest to study. Fourthly, they may not be able to find their desired course in any of the colleges. Hence, they started looking for a job with whatever
qualification they have, eventually found a job and began to work. After working for some time, some of these people start to show interest in pursuing
their education to a higher level-something that they did not do previously. They are keen to pick up where they had left off. There are several compelling
reasons why they want to do this. Firstly, they now have the financial capability to take up the course. After working for a period of time, they could have
saved a substantial sum of money and want to invest in their education. Secondly, their learning ability could have improved and they have succeeded in
meeting the entrance requirement set by the college. Some people excel in their studies later. Thirdly, they could have developed interest in a particular
subject during their course of work or personal encounters. Sometimes, certain encounters in our life may uncover our deep rooted passion or interest in a
certain subject and we want to further our knowledge in that area. Fourthly, these people could have been promoted to a higher position after working in
the industry for a period of time and they need to acquire more knowledge in the field they are working. When a person is given a higher position, the
demand for knowledge in a certain subject also increases. Hence, he or she needs to learn more about that subject in order to perform his or her duties
efficiently. For example, if an engineer is promoted to be a chief engineer, he or she should increase his or her engineering knowledge. Perhaps, in another
case, if an engineer is promoted to be the head of the engineering department, he or she should learn more about management skills. In either case, the
person has to acquire more knowledge in order to perform the new responsibilities well. Is it too late for these people to learn again? The answer is no. It
is never too late for them to learn as long as they have the means and the opportunity to do so. If they are interested to learn, and have the money and
time to do so, they should take the chance to learn. As long as they can apply the new knowledge, they should go forth and take up a course. They
should not deprive themselves from enjoying the benefits of learning. Moreover, with so many distance learning programs available, they can study without
having to quit their jobs. Many colleges provide distance learning programs for various disciplines specifically for working adults who want to study but do
not wish to leave their jobs. Distance learning programs provide people the flexibility and freedom to study at any place and any time. These programs
are gaining more popularity and credibility. Some research studies have shown that distance learning education can be as effective as campus-based
education and distance students can perform as well as or better than campus-based students. Are you keen to further your education? If you are, then
there is no reason why you should not proceed to take up a course and learn. At any point of your life, it is always not too late to study a course and gain
additional knowledge. Besides, with distance education, learning is made possible now for those who want to study as well as continue working. You can
carry on with whatever you are doing and learn at your own pace and at any place. The
issues will be different and many more in adulthood than they were in your childhood years. Hence you will have to find new ways to cope with these
challenges and issues posed by the learning disability. Most children plan on marrying, having children, and being a productive member of their society. If
you have a learning disability, you will have to incorporate it into your life-plan. You will need to learn ways of handling the milestones in your life and still
deal with your disability. You can lead a successful life with a little by taking some small steps. Learning disabilities come in many forms, but usually
affect how a person thinks, talks, hears, reads and writes. These problems impact how you process thoughts and perform tasks such as mathematics.
Since we use these skills everyday, you will have to find ways of coping with daily tasks. It can be extremely difficult to be an adult with a learning
disability. Other adults expect you to have the same skill sets that they do and may become angry and frustrated when they have to repeatedly explain
something to you. They don't realize that you need extra time to make sense of certain things. You may even drop out of classes you're taking because
others don't understand your needs. Doing this will most likely jeopardize your career plans. You need to find the balance between having a disability and
changing your goals. You do need to know your limitations but at the same time there is no reason for you not to live a full and happy life. You should be
able to enjoy relationships and being a parent, even with your learning disability. Being a parent with learning disability can be tough and stressing. To
reduce the stress of being a disability parent, you can do a number of things like take care of your time and manage it properly. One of the many tricks
that you can implement so that you don't forget important family information is to have a calendar prominently displayed in the kitchen or other room in your
home. Keep track of dates and times when you and your children need to be somewhere. This way you have a constant visual reminder to refer to so that
you don't miss appointments and pick up times. Keep your home as organized as possible so that when you need to find something it will be in a
permanent location inside your home. This ensures that you don't spend unnecessary time searching for something that you need since this can often lead
to your frustration and anger. Remember that it is very important to remain calm and patient even when things are not going the way you may want them
to. Everyone, even those who don't have a learning disability will have moments that are frustrating and trying. Do not blame everything that goes wrong on
your learning disability.
About the Author
Patrick Hartell is the owner of First Disability, the #1 source on the internet for information about disability. You certainly can “teach an old dog new tricks” by understanding the
cognitive and social characteristics of adult learners. Using the right instructional strategies to maximize the learning advantages and address the
learning challenges of adult learners can make all the difference in their success. Adult Learner Cognitive Characteristics 1. Generally speaking,
most adult learners share the following characteristics:
2. Tend to be self-directed and want control over their own learning
3. Have self-imposed cognitive barriers due to years of academic failure and lack self-confidence
4. Can be resistant to new ideas or approaches–are less open-minded than youth
5. Under-estimate their ability to learn
6. Desire pragmatic and relevant instruction that they perceive as valuable
7. Are intrinsically motivated
8. Interpret new learning in the context of old learning
9. Learn at a slower pace than that of youth
10. Are very concerned about the effective use of their time
Adult Learner Social Characteristics
1. Generally speaking, most adult learners share the following characteristics:
2. Can be resistant to group work
3. See teachers as peer partners in the learning process
4. Demand teacher availability and easy access
5. Want flexibility and see learning as secondary to other pre-occupations in their lives Adult Learner Instructional Strategies
1. Adult learners need to be actively included in their own evaluation of assessment data. Students set personal goals and use learning activities that
directly address assessment deficits and demonstrate incremental progress toward their short-term and long-term goals. Reading workshops can
easily be individualized to allow adult learners to work at their own pace.

2. A few talking points may be helpful to bolster the confidence of adult learners and to provide the motivation needed for success:
"Unfortunately, some of your past reading instruction was poor; it’s not your fault that you have some skills to work on.” a.k.a.
“blame someone else”
“You can learn in this class. If you come to class willing to try, you will significantly improve your reading, I promise.” I will be flexible and
work around your schedule.
“I know you have tried before, but this time is different.”
“You will be able to chart your own progress and see what you are learning in this class.”
“Don’t give up. Adult learners can learn. Although they sometimes learn a bit more slowly than children, they learn at a deeper and
more memorable level. The pay-off will be huge for you when you complete this class.”
About the Author
Mark Pennington is an educational author, presenter, reading specialist, and middle school teacher. Recent UCAS data highlights
just how many older people are applying, with an 18 percent rise of applicants aged 25 and over - this has bumped the overall number of extra
students competing to get into UK institutions by another 50,000 compared to last year.
Although this sudden influx of students is no doubt set to strain our recession-hit universities even further, as well as making the application process
even tougher for those who a few years ago would haves secured a place with ease, I see this as a very good thing for education as a whole - and a
good opportunity for the UK's HE institutions to adapt to the needs of a wider variety of students and developing technologies.
When we discuss e-Learning, adult education or distance courses - if we are not describing its successes we are usually talking about issues that
people come across when embarking on such an endeavour. Steve Wheeler (from his blog: steve-wheeler.blogspot.com) is aware of this and decided
to ask his Twitter followers what they thought the primary issues with, specifically, e-Learning were. What inspired this particular article is the
response from one follower in Liverpool who argued ‘that integrating e-learning into the mainstream (and perhaps losing the 'e' that
distinguishes it)' was important. A notion that got me thinking.
Surely then, 2009 and 2010 may well be the year that we really begin to see this happen. E-Learning is ear-marked for further funding in light of the
40th anniversary of the Open University, and additionally, the greater reach of online lessons where physical class space and accommodation doesn't
have to be considered will no doubt become more important for institutions and students alike.
At the same time, I can't help but imagine that the notion of ‘adult education' as opposed to just ‘education' is on its way out also - and
it is e-Learning technology which is having a hand in that too. Online education is changing the way in which the individual student interacts with the
college in two ways, the first: by offering a flexible, individually fitted, means to accessing information and the second: by providing open content (i.e.
texts created by institutions but that are available to all). Consequently, once e-Learning does become "mainstream" I envisage a learning
environment that has absolutely nothing to do with the age of the student, and everything to do with that innocuous vowel - though I'm sure we will
have forgotten all about it.
About the Author
Sarah Maple is writing for Kaplan about degree courses.
Source: http://www.edarticle.com

Distance Learning to Play a Major Part in President Obama's Adult Education Plans

Distance Learning to Play a Major Part in President Obama's Adult Education Plans
In a speech at Macombe Community College in Michigan, President Barack Obama has made some major new announcements regarding funding
and plans for adult education and community colleges. The announcements come as many adults return to education in light of the recession, with
recent reports from the state of Utah (at sltrib.com) claiming that the number of enrolments have increased by 19 percent in the past school year.
Obama was generally positive about the nation's community colleges and highlighted the past trend of treating community colleges ‘like the
stepchild of the higher education system'. But he also had some criticisms that called for some reform.
‘Now, I know that for a long time there have been politicians who have spoken of training as a silver bullet and college as a cure-all," he said.
"It's not, and we know that. I can't tell you how many workers who've been laid off, you talk to them about training and they say, "Training for what?"
So I understand the frustrations that a lot of people have, especially if the training is not well designed for the specific jobs that are being created out
there.'
$12 billion has been earmarked for a ten year initiative to be used across the USA, in an attempt to improve the degree completion rate by 50 percent.
According to insidehighered.com, president of the American Association of Community Colleges George R. Boggs described the plan as
‘pretty ambitious'.
Yet, the use of distance education as a tool to meet these goals can also be regarded as just as determined. President Obama aims to make such
courses free online - a move that has been called "historic" and "transformative" at the above source.
According to the transcript of the speech at whitehouse.gov, President Obama said: "Even as we repair bricks and mortar…we're going to
support the creation of a new online, open-source clearinghouse of courses so that community colleges across the country can offer more classes
without building more classrooms."
The idea is a pioneering one, especially as many countries are still behind in regards to embracing open content. Similar moves concerning distance
education have been announced in the UK. In order to promote the use of online courses, Prime Minister Gordon Brown as announced a £20
million budget as an aid to students who might drop out of degree courses who can then complete their studies online.
About the Author
Sarah Maple is writing for Kaplan Open Learning about distance learning courses.
Source: http://www.edarticle.com

Digital Inclusion: How the accessibility of online courses might help

Digital Inclusion: How the accessibility of online courses might help
A recent BBC report entitled ‘Your country needs you connected' sheds fresh light on the number of people in the UK who are digitally
excluded. According to Jane Wakefield, whilst the popularity of Twitter and Facebook are growing, '17 million Britons have never been online'. Digital
Champion, Martha Lane Fox, is at the forefront of getting the outsiders online - so how can online certificate degree courses help her cause.
According to the report, Lane Fox is primarily concerned with targeting the six million poorest in the country, in order to break the correlation between
social and digital exclusion. This is regarded as a particularly tough job by Bill Dutton of the Oxford Internet Institute. He asks, "How do you get
people to experience a technology that they are predisposed not to be interested in?"
This is a valid problem, and one that I think will be solved, naturally by the growing dependency on e-Learning and online technologies to solve the
increasing demand for further education courses. Yet equally, there undoubtedly needs an increase in accessibility for online courses beyond paid
higher education institutions in order to minimize the risk of deterrence even further.
This calls for all types of business and services to offer easy and relevant online schemes. A move that has already been made by the Department
for Work and Pensions, who's job search site has, according to Wakefield, ‘averaged a pretty impressive one million searches per day'. Such
schemes are causing more of those who may not be connected at home to visit their local online centres - a trend that is no doubt stimulated by the
need of many to increase their job searching zeal.
This report come at a time when in the US, Barack Obama has unveiled an initiative funding of $12 million to be given to community colleges across
the country. In order to increase the degree and certificate completion rate by 50 percent, he is also calling to make a number of distance learning
courses free to anybody using open content.
I can see such a method being incorporated to Lane Fox plans in the UK (or, at least, I hope it will be). Offering free mini-courses ‘to help you
find a job online' or ‘to help you fill in your tax return online' all seem logical - and if they are seen as a way of saving money - then the benefits
of digital inclusion will be all the more evident.
About the Author
Sarah Maple is writing for Kaplan about degree courses and education in general.
Source: http://www.edarticle.com
